Using Fresh Flowers In Your Spiritual and Devotional Practice
Did you know fresh flowers can be a powerful devotional and spiritual practice??
In Feng Shui, fresh plants represent the element of wood.
When working in the practice of Feng Shui, the goal is to bring about harmony between the energies in your space, as this practice sees the home, or any space, as a reflection of our life. So if you shift the energy of your home, you effectively and intentionally shift the energy in various areas of your life.
Not to get too into Feng Shui, but the home is divided into quadrants that represent areas of life. Just like an astrology chart with houses that rule over our life, Feng Shui organizes the areas of life this way. Feng Shui also takes into account the energy of the year and how tht interacts with your home and life. To balance those things to create the harmony you’re seeking >> you use the elements!
In Feng Shui, there are 5 elements: 🔥fire, 💧water, 🧱earth, 🪴wood, and 🪙metal.
Plants can represent wood or earth depending on what type of plant they are. And even more intricately, a draping plant will be more like a water element, calming a space. And a spiky plant will bring up the energy in a space like the element of fire!
So by simply adding fresh plants to a space, we can intentionally shift our own life!!!! 🪴
Speaking of decorating a space….There are so many theories about color and aesthetics making a big impact on our mental health and overall happiness!
Color theory has been proven as an effective tool in shifting moods easily. So many marketing and advertising companies harness the power of subliminal conditioning in color.
McDonald’s, for instance, is all red and yellow because red is a color that makes us hungrier, activated, and ready for quick decisions. Yellow activates our nervous system and is associated with happiness (I’m lovin’ it)! These energies will help them make more sales by just thinking of these colors! 🔴🟡
So when we are intentionally decorating our space, a little color can go a long way! (Here is a link to learn more about the psychology of colors.)
Beyond color theory, there is a really cool psychological concept called dopamine decor! If you have ADHD, this is such a useful and unique way of decorating (that goes against a lot of popular design theory). Instead of decorating for simplicity or to look put together and refined, dopamine decor asks us to simply follow our joy and happiness.
In this school of thought, our home becomes a cared-for space of beauty instead of a means to an end. And I don’t know about you, but looking at fresh flowers makes me really happy!
Adding more nature to our industrial lives can stimulate a deeper connection to nature (and connect us back to our human nature!) So much of modernity disconnects us from nature. And HELLO, we are all part of the human species that was designed to live in sustainable community with all of the Earth’s creatures. 🌍🌎🌏
Adding elements of nature back into our home can not only make an energetic difference, but a psychological difference. Countless studies show how healing it is for our brain and body to be in nature. Our nervous systems become calm, and we can finally enjoy the present moment. There is also evidence that shows natural lighting, like candles, calms down our body for sleep. The proof is all there for us to remember that for millennia we existed so closely to nature and are designed to.
So if you’re one of those girlies that kills plants or wants a low maintenance version of plants in your home, flowers can be that b*tch for you! 💐
Now to tie it all in with the spiritual and devotional practice, as I have hopefully convinced you by now to get some flowers next time you’re grocery shopping! 😅🤞
Many spiritual practices (like rituals and altars), deities, ancestors, and spirit guides love flowers as offerings! Anytime you can add a live natural element (see previous statement about humans being a part of nature) to your spiritual work, the better. The elements are very powerful in rituals, altars, and offerings. It is good practice to have a glass of water, some earthly plant matter, smoke for wind, and a candle for fire. In many spiritual practices, we call the elements because they are the building blocks of life. The elements help us balance energy. And flowers can represent earth in your work, and they can also hold other energetic frequencies. As every natural plant matter carries its own spiritual energies (click the link to see specific flower meanings)! And always remember in ANY spiritual work, that your intention matters most of all. So if you intend it to be for something, let Spirit know!
Bonus points: If for those who are ruled by Venus (Taurus and Libra risings, or who have other strong Venus placements you want to step into!) When I was working with Aphrodite, she wanted carnations as an offering. You can always ask them to get a specific answer if you are intuitively sure.
Essentially, you can tap into your heart and desire and use the energy of what you’re feeling, calling in, or releasing to be bolstered by the flowers you select for your home. The more purpose and intention we can inject into our daily life, the more magickal our life feels. Every time you look at those flowers, you’ll be reminded of your intention. To feed it, water it, nurture it. It will bring you closer to your spirituality, AND your life can become a walking devotional altar for yourself or whoever you work with! Let the beauty and fragility of flowers remind you to seize the present moment and to allow natural endings to bring you to the next phase of your life!
Let me know your thoughts! And I’d love to hear how it goes if you decide to try it out!
